Stone Circle of Harris

Above is the an ancient stone circle on the island of Harris, I choose to study these rocks as reference for the magic stones that would be in my diorama. I find these stones really fascinating, how they are eerily placed from any other land mark, the way that they jut out of the ground. I think its strange that they have been placed here, and also how they are shaped. There is something natural but yet man made about them, the way that they are often very angular but not enough to know it has been touched by a stone mason, Were the stones this shape to start with or were they shaped.

I cannot tell what kind of stones that they are but I think that the strong sea winds has worn them down over time, perhaps what gave them such interesting shapes. The texture reminds me a little of slate as the stone seems to be made up of thin layers, giving a plato effect.

I really love the shapes and textures of the stones here. The one closest to the left is a good example, the way that it is curved on one side and then has a right angle step on the other side. As if it is an abstract sculpture.

The three to the left were some of the biggest stones in the circle, like huge monoliths of stone, very imposing and a sense of power from them, perhaps mystical. The kind of vibe I want my stones to give. To the left my Mum helpfully gives some reference to the extent of the size of these stones.
I tried to sculpt out the rock in the center image above in Zbrush, it didn't work as well as I had hoped considering I spent nearly a whole day on it. I think it is the above section, the actual shaping of the rock where I went wrong, I think the texturing was fine.
For the texturing I used alphas I downloaded from the pixoligic website.
I made my magic texture into an alpha to see what it looked like on the stone, I didn't like the effect to much I think it would work better if the rock was smoother, which I may experiment with. I also considered having one big magic symbol instead of a whole texture, i may also look further into that.
